you probably remember my headboard makeover i did a couple months ago using my Silhouette. well i wanted to share a little bit more about how i did it. i used the Premium Vinyl from Silhouette and it worked like a charm! the stronger adhesive works great on my headboard. we have been sitting against and using this headboard for 2 months now and i am very impressed with how well the Premium Vinyl has faired. it has even withstood a curious 2 yr old!

{no i did not make the yellow flower pillows, although i wish i did! i may try replicating them sometime though.}
adding the vinyl decal to my headboard was so much cheaper than buying a whole new headboard. plus when i get tired of it or change my color scheme, all i have to do is peel it off!
How I did it:
- to create the headboard decal, i enlarged the design i wanted to use very large. {this is a jillion times easier with the new Silhouette Studio Software which you can download for FREE here.}
- i did a test cut on some paper to make sure i liked the size on the headboard
- then i repeated the design to fit the size i needed {48"}. make sure you stay inside the red lines or it will not cut it.
- i planned to do two rows across the width of the vinyl {approx 8"}
- i added a straight cut line 8" down in the design so that it cut the design into 8" strips by the length- 48.5" *Note: when you change your document size, its not the cutting size. there is a small allowance on both directions that will not be cut. so i sized my document to be 8.5"x48.5" which is slightly bigger than i needed, it actually cut 8" by 47.5"
- using the premium transfer paper, i transferred it to our headboard with Davis's help. i *highly* recommend having a second set of hands to help you line things up when you are working with large vinyl projects like this.
- i only used 1 roll of Premium Vinyl and it was all i needed to complete this design.
- when you cut vinyl, you do not need the cutting mat.
- *before you attempt a large vinyl project like this, i highly suggest doing several smaller projects first to become comfortable with your Silhouette and how it cuts.
This is AWESOME! I'm doing something similar to a piece of my furniture. I love the huge effect that some vinyl can give!

Your pillows are what initially caught my eye, but I love the headboard! What a great idea! I love the color scheme in your room!
ReplyDeleteI love this!! I don't own a Silhouette, but I swear, this project just about made me leave to get one immediately.
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing. I can't believe you were able to line it up so well. I've been hesitant to do a big project like that because I wasn't sure how well I'd be able to match it up. Awesome job!
