Truncating Update

so it sounds like you guys *aren't fans of truncating!* lol that's totally fine. what if i only truncate tutorials and long posts? tutorials can get really long and new visitors get annoyed to have to scroll down for 10 minutes to see the next post.

so are you guys ok if i truncate my tutorials and the occasional long to clean up my home page?

all other posts will be sans page breaks.

    Haha, that is a good deal! I don't really like it either, but it's understandable to do it for long posts.

    After this update, I HAD to go back and read the comments on your original post. I almost commented on your original post -- but decided not to be negative. I thought maybe it was just me that didn't like to have to click to continue reading.... Now I see - I'm not alone. =)

    I don't love the truncating, BUT, I'm with you on the truncating tutorials...because I've been visiting blogs before and hate having to keep clicking "older post" to see what the blog holds. So, my vote is "Yes" truncate long post and leave short ones just how they are.

    I didn't comment on the previous post, but I wanted to weigh in that I also like to see posts in full with no truncating. I read my blogs in Good Reader which has a shortcut of just typing "N" to get to the next post so if I don't want to read further, I just hit the key and move on.

    Man now I'm tempted to go back and read the last comments, too! I too was like "oh I hate truncating" but I was like, that is not nice! I wanna see all you have to say :).

    Glad you will limit the use of the "truncation" _ I'm not a big fan either but it's a good idea for tutorials :)

    You're so sweet, bending to reader fancies :) Good idea about truncating long posts... I noticed Ashley (make it and love it) has been doing it recently, but not before we get a good taste of what the project is already. I don't mind that at all! You have lots of fun projects, can't wait to see more!

    I was going to mention Ashley at Make It and Love It too. She does a great job at capturing your interest to keep reading, but that does take a lot of work. Jen at Tatertots and Jello does it now also, and I more than likely don't click read more because it really feels like so much work, and then you have to click back to see more of the blog.

    One thing I really don't like is missing out on what else there is. Is there a way to get the "read more" links to open in a new tab? I mean besides the reader doing it manually?

    Someone should figure out a "skip to next post" or something link. :) That way if you aren't interested, you can skip, but those who are (which with your posts are pretty much everybody!) you can read on and click nothing. :)

    Just saw this.. hmm now I'm intrigued. I just started truncating for the same reasons, but now I'm thinking twice about it. I didn't realize readers didn't like it... maybe I'll go with you on just doing it on really long posts. Thanks for the posts. I LOVE your blog!

    Personally I prefer posts more than, say three paragraphs, should be truncated. It's easier on the eyes I think. I'll know by three paragraphs if I want to read the rest or move on to the next gem! :)

    I think truncating is okay as long as I can still see a picture from what the post is about.

    I just did a tutorial on truncating a few weeks ago and I got a similar response - but mostly from people that are using Readers because it requires them to actually visit the blog and click read more. And for the commenter above that said clicking read more should open a new page - that is possible, but then you have to set up your truncating through html instead of using the simple Blogger break option. ;)

    I read in google reader and I'll be honest, those that truncate almost always get skipped, especially those with no pictures! I would recommend that whenever you do truncate, make sure you AT LEAST truncate AFTER a picture of the finished project. If I love it, then I'm definitely going to go to the check it out, or at least star it for later. If its just words, forget it!
