Reader's Tutorial Week is a week where i spotlight my Reader's fabulous tutorials and introduce you to fellow Craftaholics. it's tons of fun!!
Well hello!
I'm Mandy, and I'm relatively new to the blog world.
I've always been obsessed with crafting though, and I recently decided to document my artistic endeavors in blog form.
So far it's been a fun adventure, and you can find more about that at
Mandy's Yellow Corner.
Sewing has been my most recent obsession, and for a long time now [or at least a month. . .] I've been wanting to sew a dress.
I finally got up the guts to just do it.
And I'm pretty happy with the result:
If you want to know how I did it, here's the "how to" . . .
It all started once upon a time when I saw this
beautiful teal jersey material
at the craft store:
I bought one yard, and cut it into two equal pieces.
For each, I folded the top over about 5 inches and pinned it.
Then I used elastic thread in my bobbin to sew five horizontal lines across the folded part- each about an inch apart:
I did this to both pieces of fabric and then laid them together, fronts facing in and pinned them along the sides.
I have to admit, there's quite a bit of guessing work here :] Gage what size [or how tight] you would like the dress to be around the chest, and then just sort of tapper it out from there.
Sew along pin lines:
Then trim the extra fabric:
Now for the straps. . .
Out of the extra fabric, take a strip and cut to straps that are long enough to go over your shoulders. Mine were about 8 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide.
Then hem the straps. . . With a 1/4 inch seam, my straps ended up being about an inch wide.
Next I slid the dress on to make sure that I would get the straps correct :]
I pinned them right in the middle of the front of the dress:
And then I criss-crossed them in the back and pinned them as well.
Then just sew in the straps and. . .
Booyah!
It's worth stating that I did not hem the bottom of the dress, because I really like the unfinished look at the moment, but I may go back and hem it later.
Please let me know if there's anything unclear in there. . . I'd be happy to clarify if you have any questions!
