when we moved into our home over 3 years ago, we updated almost everything in the kitchen: new counter tops, deep sink, faucet, track lighting, built a breakfast bar, etc. etc etc. but we did not have the budget to redo the cabinets. we still don't. and as some of you may know, we have been trying to sell our house to relocate closer to Davis's work. we have been trying to make small changes to improve our home without breaking the bank {because this housing market is doing a good job of that already. ugh}
our latest "fix" was to update our kitchen hardware. the previous owners had the ugly knobs on the left on every single cabinet door. including drawers. drove us crazy. after a couple trips to the hardware store, we selected the pretty knobs on the right. they are a lot bigger and look so much better!
we got new pulls for the drawers. which i love! the pulls were $5/each, but we only needed 4. we bought the knobs in a value pack instead of out of the bin to save money and so they were $2/each instead of $3. so for $60, we updated all the knobs and drawers in our kitchen.
this next picture is our kitchen BEFORE with the old hardware.

the old hardware just blended into the cabinets.
and below is an AFTER shot. sorry they're different angles.
the new hardware stands out and adds to the beauty of the kitchen. plus they match our stainless steel appliances. it's like my kitchen got new earrings or something!
and if you don't know how to change your existing hardware, it is simple. all you need is a screw driver, manual or electric. unscrew the knob's screw from the inside of the door, put the new knob in place, and screw tight. ta-da! simple as that.
Knobs are easy and you are right these new ones definitely brighten up the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteThe knobs look great. I am going to make a suggestion if you really want to update the kitchen. Talk to your real estate agent about painting the cupboards. If you painted them in a nice neutral colour....they would look really updated. We did that when we sold our house and I have to tell you, it made a huge impact in the kitchen for the cost of I think two gallons of paint. I personally love your wood cabinets, but knowing how picky ass some people can be I thought I would suggest painting them :)
ReplyDeleteThey look great!! Hope you make that sale soon! Painting them is an option I would consider too!! JMO

ReplyDeleteWe wanted to paint the cabinets white, but our realtor advised against it because painted cabinets is going out of style. Plus wood is more neutral. So we're just leaving them as is.

always a nice update. I hear you on kitchens. They can be sooo pricey. Do you have a "Cabinets to go" franchise near you? We just re-did my in laws kitchen for $3200 for real wood, dove-tail joints and all. The catch on why they're so cheap is that you have to assemble them yourselves. It really was not that hard. Look into it.http://www.cabinetstogo.com/home.asp Perhaps they ship to you if you're not near one. I can't believe how nice their kitchen turned out. If you dont' mess too much with layout and don't move pipes and wiring and such, it's pretty easy to install. Good luck with the sale.
ReplyDeleteWe just redid our kitchen ( on a budget). Every time we made even a small change, I was amazed at the difference it made. Great knob and pull choices!

ah, so you have a kitchen similar to mine! And we have done all the same things- save the cabinets. Ours are painted, though(not by us originally). we have a bitty galley kitchen and the cabinets were done custom(not nicely) so to replace them is going to be insane.
ReplyDeletei feel your pain! good luck in selling your house! lots of people are looking for character =)
We have knotty pine cabinets. I finally painted the ones in the bathroom and added beadboard--made a huge difference! But I have heard the same thing about not painting the kitchen cabinets--so many actually like the "rustic" look and the idea that it is original. Now I just have to see if I can hang on until we finally decide to sell:)
ReplyDeleteAnd the knobs look great!
I would paint the cabinets a fun country red and then give it a little depth with dark gel stain to bring out the wood grain the the groves.
