this is the "before" pic of my caving laundry hamper liner. here it is now:
awww, so much better. and so much more functional. i did this to fix my hamper liner, but you could totally do this to update any basket liner. here's how i did it:
{you'll need 1/2 yard of fabric, scissors, sewing machine, and an iron.}
cut off the existing ties on your liner.
measure how wide your liner is. include the width of the tie openings. then double that number. for example, mine measured 31" x 2 =62" then add 2". so my total length needed was 64".
i then cut a strip of fabric 10" wide by the total the length of your liner. to get the 64" length i needed, i cut two 10" wide strips one 10"x44" and the other 10"x20".
i sewed the two strips together and ironed the seam open.
next, iron the long sides of your fabric 1/4" over on both sides.
then fold in half and iron.
sew a finishing stitch along the edge of both long sides. do not sew the short ends.
pin your fabric strip to the wrong side of your lining overlapping 1/4" as shown.
when you get the the tie openings, pin across the opening as shown.
sew the strip and liner together.
then cut in the fabric strip in the center of the tie opening leaving a little extra fabric on both sides of the opening.
tuck in the edges so that it's flush with the existing liner. pin in place for now. set the liner aside while you make 4 ties explained below.
next, cut four 5"x13" strips of fabric. you'll finish these strips like you did above, ironing over 1/4" on the long sides, then ironing in half and sew a top stitch around. you will want to tuck in the edges of one short short and finish it with a top stitch. you may leave one short side unfinished.
now insert the unfinished side of one strap into the opening of the liner strip.
and sew shut.
repeat with the other 3 straps and this is about what yours should look like.
turn your liner right side out and place in your basket or hamper and you're done!!
don't forget to tie the ties in the back :)
{i heart my sponsors! please take a second to check them out.}

ReplyDeleteI also shrunk our laundry basket liner very early in our marriage & we have been living with the same sinking bag ever since. This is a great tutorial. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteMy gosh you are talented ! I can understand what you are doing but, I too, don't like patterns.
ReplyDeleteps Do you know of any place I can see a tutorial on
covering those cushions that are on wicker chairs ? They have four buttons going through them and are not perfectly square ?
I love your site and will link if it's ok.
